Baptism

Description: Baptism is first sacrament and the foundation of Christian life. The person being baptized (child or adult) is integrated into the church community, the Body of Christ. Being washed with blessed water in the holy font, the candidate for baptism imitates Jesus' own baptism in the River Jordan, and is obedient to Jesus' command, "Very truly, I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God without being born of water and Spirit." (John 3:4). Following baptism in the water, the newly-baptized is anointed with holy chrism (myron), sealed with the gifts of the Holy Spirit as were the kings, prophets and priests of old. In so doing, the newly-baptized is adopted as a child of God, and an heir of God's Kingdom and eternal blessings. The newly-baptized now has the privilege to worship God at the holy altar, and to receive holy Communion of the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ.

Hymn: Yerrortootyoon AnpazhaneleeԵրրորդութիւն անբաժանելի
Translation: (1) The indivisible Trinity and the heavenly power has shone as light in the world. Let us praise [the Holy Trinity] with a song. (2) The true Holy Spirit, who descended from heaven, today also rested upon the apostles. Let us praise [the Holy Spirit] with a song. (3) In this redemptive mystery, the One who descended upon the apostles today was made known to the prophet. Let us praise Him in song.

Hymn: Zoghormootyoon ko ztoorn pats mez DerԶողորմութիւն քո զդուռն բաց մեզ Տէր
Description: This hymn is sung while the clergy, candidate for baptism, godparents and family process from the narthex (gaveet) into the church at the beginning of the Baptism service.
Translation: (1) Open for us the gate of your mercy, O Lord, and, together with your saints, let us be worthy of your luminous realm. (2) Receive us also into the mansions that you have prepared for your saints, O Savior, through adoption in the book of life. (3) O fearsome Judge, when you take your place at the bench, take care of your creatures through the prayers and intercession of the holy hermits.

Hymn: Arekagn ArtarootyanԱրեգակն արդարութեան
Description: This hymn is sung during the procession from the chancel, in front of the bema, to the baptismal font or the baptistery.
Translation: (1) Christ, the Sun of righteousness, shining in the world, has dispelled the darkness of ignorance. After his crucifixion and resurrection he ascended to the Father, from whence he shone. Together with the Father and the Holy Spirit He is worshiped by the heavenly and earthly beings. We too, therefore, worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. (2) In place of the Word who was born of the bosom and who ascended into heaven, the Spirit of Truth was sent as the good news of the Father to console those who had become dejected as a result of Adam, and to arm the troop of chosen apostles. We too, therefore, worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth. (3) Today, the first mother's grievous and nocturnal pain of bearing children has been relieved, for the Spirit has given second birth to those are born of the flesh for death and corruption; making them children of the light of the Father. We too, therefore, worship the Father in Spirit and in Truth.

Description: This is the response sung by the people during the blessing of the water. Each time the priest chants, "Blessed, protected and providentially safeguarded be this water...", the response is sung.
Translation: Amen. Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia.

Hymn: Vor HamakooytՈր համագոյդ
Translation: (1) You are consubstantial with the Father and the Son, O indescribable procession of the ever-Divine. Today you poured our water from Jerusalem. O Spirit of God, have mercy on us. (2) You are Creator with the Father and the Son, by whom creatures were born to life in the water. Today, from water, you give birth to children of God. Spirit of God, have mercy on us. (3) You are glorified with the Father and the Son and you search the depths of God. Today you transformed the fools of the world into people who know the depths of knowledge. Spirit of God, have mercy on us.

Hymn: Aghpyoor GenatsԱղբիւր կենաց
Translation: (1) Fountain of life, distributor of grace, O Spirit descended from the heights. You have given imperishable gifts to the apostles. (2) Hovering over the waters, you produced creation. Descending into the water of the font, you give birth to children of God. (3) Adorning it and restoring it, you always renew your church. Through the variety of the gifts of your grace, her children shine.

Hymn: Asdvadz khosetsavԱստուած խօսեցաւ
Description: This hymn is sung after the newly-baptized is anointed with the holy Myron.
Translation: (1) God spoke from on high. Hear Him, O residents of the Earth. He came and saved all creatures so that we might call the name of the Lord. Praise Him in the heights! (2) We have been called 'New Israel'. In Christ we have become part of the Lord, and heirs of Christ. So that we might call the name of the Lord. Praise Him in the heights! (3) We have eaten from the living rock, for the Lord is sweet. In faith we have been anointed with the oil of holiness. So that we might call the name of the Lord. Praise Him in the heights! (4) We have taken refuge in you, O mother and handmaiden of Christ. Intercede for us so that we might call the name of the Lord, and magnifying you, give you honor.

Hymn: Nor SionՆոր Սիոն
Translation: (1) Through the holy font children have been born as the New Sion, emblazened in the grace of the Holy Spirit. Praise the heavenly Father on the day of the birth of the holy Virgin, by whom you were liberated from the curse of her predecessor. (2) By the blood of the lamb without blemish the people have been saved. On the birthday of the mother of One who cannot be born, praise the only-begotten, who was pleased to take body from her without seed. By whom you were liberated from the curse of her predecessor. (3) As a result of the abundantly-flowing graces of the Spirit, the nations have been emblazoned in light. On the birthday of the mother and birth-giver of the Word, extol with spiritual song the Spirit, glorified with the Son, who sanctified the place where the Son took body.
