Last year's Walk-a-Thon raised over $10,000 to support the work of St. Nersess Seminary
February 10, 2011

The third annual St. Nersess Walk for Faith will take place on Sunday, April 3, 2011.

As in past years, friends of all ages, will gather at the Seminary for a 3-kilometer walk around New Rochelle to raise funds to support the many ministries of St. Nersess. Last year, over $10,000 was raised by walkers all over the country, who solicited pledges from family, friends and neighbors. Our goal this year is to do even better, in celebration of the Seminary's 50th Anniversary.

"This event is unique among all of our fund-raising programs," said Fr. Daniel Findikyan. "A good portion of the donations we receive from the 3K Walk pledges comes from non-Armenian friends, neighbors, classmates and workmates of our walkers all over the country."

"Our success in the Walk comes not from a few large gifts, but from a great number of $10 and $20 donations," added Deacon Levon Altiparmakian, the Seminary administrator, who will be lacing his Nikes for the walk.

How You Can Help
Start soliciting sponsors today! You'll be surprised who will pledge $20 to support the good work of St. Nersess. Download the form here. You can also make a donation to the Walk for Faith online.

Fr. Stepanos will be In the House!
If you are in the New York/New Jersey metropolitan area, come to St. Nersess on April 3 at 10:00AM for Divine Liturgy and brunch. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian, beloved "Emeritus" Director of the Summer Conferences, will celebrate theBadarak and preach the sermon. Then hit the pavement with your St. Nersess friends.

If you live far from the Seminary, organize your own 3K walk with friends. Or, if you're not up to it, gather sponsors to support our walkers at St. Nersess.

Sponsor checks should be made out to St. Nersess Armenian Seminary and are fully tax deductible.

World Premiere of St. Nersess: A Calling Fulfilled

February 9, 2011

More than 250 people from the greater San Francisco Bay Area of California gathered in the hall of St. John Armenian Church in San Francisco on Sunday, January 31 for the world premiere of a short documentary film about St. Nersess Armenian Seminary entitled, St. Nersess Seminary: A Calling Fulfilled.

The 26-minute program, filmed at the Seminary in New Rochelle, New York, as well as at a number of Armenian Churches on the East and West Coasts, portrays the mission, work and daily life of the Seminary as told by seminarians, alumni, the dean, and faculty. Its release coincides with the 50th Anniversary of the establishment of the Seminary in 1961.

The documentary is the work of the noted young Armenian film-maker, Anthony Catchatoorian, who has produced a number of well-received short films on Armenian and other topics. Catchatoorian is also an ordained deacon of the Armenian Church.

Fr. Daniel Findikyan (R) poses with Fr. Sarkis Petoyan and Anthony Catchatoorian following the premiere of the
new documentary film on St. Nersess Armenian Seminary at St. John Armenian Church, San Francisco.
"St. Nersess Seminary is arguably the most important institution of the Armenian Church in North America," said Fr. Sarkis Petoyan, Pastor of St. Gregory Armenian Church in Pasadena, California. Fr. Petoyan, a St. Nersess alumnus, had the initial vision for the film and took it upon himself to raise the funds necessary to produce it, and to oversee the entire production from start to finish.  "God has called many, many young Armenian Americans to study their church's theology and traditions and to pledge their lives to her service as priests, teachers and lay ministers. Yet many do not realize that such a thing is even possible in the United States. Our hope is to distribute this film widely to encourage young people to enroll in the Seminary, and to elicit financial support for this critical institution."

Major funding for the project was contributed by the late Vahram Takvorian, long-time member and benefactor of St. John Armenian Church of San Francisco. Sadly, his untimely death last year prevented him from seeing the fruits of his generosity. His wife Rita, and children, Deacon Hratch and Nadine, as well as members of the extended family were on hand for the premiere. Deacon Hratch attended the St. Nersess Deacon's Training Program in the late 1990's and now operates the family business.

"Today we witness the realization of a dream come true," said Fr. Daniel Findikyan, speaking to the audience at the conclusion of the premiere. "We are enormously grateful to Fr. Sarkis, Deacon Anthony, the Takvorian family and all of those who made this film possible."

Earlier in the day, with the blessing of His Eminence Abp. Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese, Fr. Findikyan celebrated the Divine Liturgy and the preached the sermons at St. John. He then travelled south for a gathering of alumni, clergy and friends at the home of Drs. Abraham and Sara Terian in Fresno. The next day, the dean met with Abp. Hovnan at the Diocesan headquarters in Burbank, and was interviewed about the St. Nersess for television broadcast in the Los Angeles area.

The Art of Armenian Sacred Song: A Lecture-Recital by Deacon Rubik Mailian

St. Nersess alumnus Deacon Rubik Mailian will lecture about and perform Armenian sacred hymns and sharagans at the Seminary on Monday, February 7 at 7:30PM. All are welcome.

Deacon Rubik Mailian, Director of Music at St. John's Armenian Church of Greater Detroit, Michigan and a graduate of St. Nersess Seminary, will present a lecture-recital at the Seminary entitledThe Art of Armenian Sacred Song.

The program will take place this Monday, February 7, 2011 at 7:30PM at the Seminary in New Rochelle, New York.

Beauty, Song and God
Sacred song goes back to the origins of Armenian Christianity. There is not a single service of the Armenian Church that is not suffused with vocal melody, be it simple chants or more complex melodies. Why is singing essential to worship? What has beautiful singing to do with God? Deacon Rubik will explore the foundations and essence of sacred song in Armenian Church worship through a lecture illustrated by renditions of various Armenian hymns and sharagans in his own, hauntingly beautiful tenor voice.

Alumnus of St. Nersess
A classically-trained vocalist, Deacon Mailian has performed with the Houston Symphany, the Michigan Opera Theatre and the Macomb Symphony Orchestra. He holds the Master of Music in Choral Conducting from the University of Houston as well as graduate theological degrees from St. Nersess Seminary and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. As well, he has lectured internationally on the sacred music of the Armenian Church.

Theology and Art
The program is the second in a series of lecture-demonstrations organized this year by St. Nersess Seminary entitled, The Arts of Theology. "For the Armenian Church, theology is not merely a matter of words and abstract intellectual concepts," said the Dean, Fr. Daniel Findikyan. "Armenians have always understood theology to be the ongoing process, taken up by all Christians, to come to know a God who is in their midst. As such, theology is revealed in a variety of sacred arts," the Dean added.

All are welcome to attend the lecture and enjoy the music. A reception will follow.

The lecture has been subsidized by the Edward and Anita Essayan Educational Fund of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary. For more information write to info@stnersess.edu or call (914) 636-2003.
