May 30, 2007

New York, NY - The Spring Session of the Standing Conference of Canonical Orthodox Bishops in the Americas (SCOBA) was convened on May 23, 2007 at the St. Vladimir's Seminary in Crestwood, New York. Metropolitan Herman of the Orthodox Church in America hosted the session and welcomed the assembly.

Archbishop Demetrios, Chairman of SCOBA, convened the session at 10:00 a.m. In addition to Metropolitan Herman of the OCA, other Hierarchs present were: Metropolitan Joseph of the Bulgarian Eastern Orthodox Church, Archbishop Nicolae of the Romanian Orthodox Archdiocese, Bishop Ilia of Philomelion of the Albanian Orthodox Diocese, Bishop Antoun of Miami representing Metropolitan Philip of the Antiochian Orthodox Archdiocese, and His Grace Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos in his last official meeting of SCOBA as General Secretary.

Also present were Fr. Mark Arey, who succeeds Bishop Dimitrios of Xanthos as SCOBA General Secretary, and members of the SCOBA Study and Planning Commission: Fr. Nicholas Apostola (Romanian), Fr. Frank Estocin (Ukrainian), Fr. Thomas FitzGerald (Greek), Fr. Jonathan Ivanoff (proxy for OCA), V. Rev. Fr. Kiprian Kazandzhiev (Bulgarian), Fr. Luke Mihaly (Carpatho-Russian), Fr. Robert Stephanopoulos (Greek), Fr. Patrick Tishel (Bulgarian), Fr. Bazyl Zawierucha (Ukrainian).

The Hierarchs adopted "A Pastoral Letter on Suicide" and a "Statement on Global Climate Change: A Moral and Spiritual Challenge" (issued separately and found at www.scoba.us). Both documents were presented by Fr. John Chryssavgis and Dr. Albert Rossi of the SCOBA Social and Moral Issues Commission.

Fr. Nicholas Triantafilou, President of Hellenic College and Holy Cross, made a presentation on an Orthodox Clergy Fellowship for all of North America. The Hierarchs encouraged the initiative and requested additional documentation and detailed analysis.

Fr. Kevin Scherer, the Director of OCF, a SCOBA Agency, made a preliminary presentation on widening the Antiochian Archdiocese program OYO (Orthodox Youth Outreach) to become a SCOBA Agency. The Hierarchs requested additional information on the concept.

Dr. Kyriaki FitzGerald presented the request for "St. Catherine's Vision" (an association of Orthodox women theologians from all Orthodox Seminaries in the Americas) for a "Second Level of Endorsement" of SCOBA as an Endorsed Group. The Hierarchs were pleased to grant the Endorsement.

Following the meeting, faculty and staff of St. Vladimir's Seminary hosted a luncheon for the Members of SCOBA who were joined by Members of SCOOCH, the Standing Conference of Oriental Orthodox Churches. The Hierarchs who were present were the new Primate of the Ethiopian Tewahedo Orthodox Church in America, Archbishop Abune Kewostos, Archbishop Khajag Barsamian and Archbishop Vicken of the Armenian Church in America, and Archbishop Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim of the Syrian Orthodox Archdiocese.

Following the luncheon, the respective Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Hierarchs held a private discussion on issues of mutual interest and concern.

Young Armenian-Americans who have some time on their hands this summer can still have the chance to spend a few days at St. Nersess this summer. Currently there are a few spaces available in the High School A and High School C conferences. There is also room in the Junior High School and Post High School B conferences.

To register, DOWNLOAD AN APPLICATION, fill it out, enclose your tuition check payable to "St. Nersess Armenian Seminary" and mail it right away to the Seminary at 150 Stratton Road, New Rochelle, NY 10804. Many parishes offer scholarships for their young people to attend St. Nersess. Check with your local priest or parish council.

The St. Nersess Armenian Seminary summer youth conferences provide an inspiring venue for young people to learn about themselves, their culture and their relationship to Jesus.

The St. Nersess campus offers a wonderful setting, almost like a sanctuary from the hectic pace of contemporary America, where young Armenians can spend quality time with old and new friends. It's a fun time filled with education, renewal and fellowship.

"I have attended more than twenty St. Nersess conferences over the past ten years," says Gregory Guroian, a veteran of the St. Nersess conferences. "It's an experience that never gets old. I always come away feeling better about myself, having made many new friends and, most importantly, having been brought closer to my faith. I highly recommend these conferences to youth of all ages, be it middle school, high school, or even college. Ask anyone who has attended, the St. Nersess experience is legendary."

Guroian will serve as Assistant Director this summer. The Director of Youth and Vocations is Rev. Fr. Stepanos Doudoukjian.

ALERT - High School 'B' is closed and has a long waiting list

The St. Nersess Summer Conferences offer Armenian young people an opportunity to learn about their Armenian faith, culture and history in a unique environment. Each conference offers daily worship, Bible study, Armenian language instruction, lectures and discussions led by clergy and lay leaders of our Church.

All of this is combined with sports, day trips and summer fun to create a well-rounded religious, cultural and social experience. St. Nersess is the perfect place for young Armenian-Americans to make lasting friendships and to discover what we have in God and in the Armenian Church.

Not Sure if St. Nersess is for YOU?
"I don't want to go to a church camp."
"I don't have any Armenian friends."
"I have other plans this summer."
"Church is boring."
"Those are the excuses I made for 2 years," said a 17-year old boy from Massachusetts. "Last summer I finally broke down and went. And now I know what I've been missing! I'll be back this summer!"

Still not sure? Go to our PHOTO GALLERY and see the faces of Armenian-American teens, college students and young adults who came to St. Nersess last summer and will be coming back this year!

A maximum of 25 students will be accepted for each conference. Participants with completed applications and full payment will be considered in the order received. Due to space and logistical planning, half of the full payment is non-refundable in case of cancellation.
