Snapshot of Three Recent Graduates

Dear St. Nersess Supporter,

In normal times, we would have mailed our annual Fall Appeal asking you to help fund the education of our students - future priests and non-ordained leaders - and support our educational goals for the 2020-21 academic year at St. Nersess Seminary. However, during these difficult days of uncertainty in our own country and especially in Artsakh and Armenia, we wish to instead just share information. We stand united in our collective support and prayers for Artsakh.

Below is an update on three recent St. Nersess graduates, one who is now deacon-in-charge of a parish and two who have begun their year-long pastoral internships. Below are snapshots on these individuals and how our seminary has greatly influenced each of their lives.

Dn. Albert Hambardzumyan: "After spending more than a year with my family at St. Hagop Armenian Church in Pinellas Park, FL, as a pastoral intern with Der Hovnan Demirjian, I have now embarked on a new journey as the Deacon-in-Charge of St. John the Baptist Armenian Church in Greenfield, WI. The three years I spent at St. Nersess Armenian Seminary as well as the eight years I spent at the Seminary of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem had a positive impact on me and prepared me well for my first pastoral assignment. St. Nersess equipped me with knowledge and experience to serve our Lord, while simultaneously serving our people."

Dn. Timothy Aznavourian: "St. Nersess has prepared me for my pastoral internship at Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Cambridge, MA, in a number of ways. Classes led by Bp. Daniel Findikyan, Dr. Roberta Ervine and others have given me an authentic look at what is the theological tradition of the Armenian Church. Dr. Ervine's classes on Church History and Patristics, in particular, have given me the ability to read ancient Armenian Church texts, while at the same time present these ancient and sacred ideas in an understandable way in the 21st century. Furthermore, the interactions I have had with professors, clergy and church leaders have helped me handle the challenges of parish life."

Dn. Armen Terjimanian: "Thanks to the training I received from our priests and professors at St. Nersess, I am well prepared for my pastoral internship at Holy Trinity Armenian Church in Cheltenham, PA. When preaching, visiting parishioners, or participating in Badarak, I am also thankful for the experience of my mini-internship at St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI, and mentorship of Hayr Aren Jebejian and Der Armash Bagdasarian as it gave a great foundation for the tasks at hand. I'm certain that my time at Holy Trinity will be a fruitful one thanks to the guidance and fatherly help of Der Hakob Gevorgyan."

These snapshots demonstrate how your continued dedication and support strengthen the leadership and community of our Church. We are proud of what we offer at St. Nersess and will continue our work.

Our homeland remains foremost in our thoughts and prayers, and we pray for our faculty, graduates, clergy and their family members who are directly affected by the crisis in Artsakh. Most importantly, we pray for peace.

With prayers,

Fr. Mardiros Chevian, Dean

Recent Graduates Participate in Mini-Internships

On May 15, Dn. Timothy Aznavourian and Dn. Armen Terjimanian received their MDiv degrees from St. Nersess Seminary and St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary without any fan-fare due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Shortly after, the two graduates began mini-internships for the month of June which will end next week on June 30. In addition to the remote courses offered to lay people and clergy this month, the mini-internships were created to replace programs that were cancelled this summer and would have required the graduates' participation. In the near future, with the blessing of His Grace Bp. Daniel Findikyan, Dn. Timothy and Dn. Armen will each begin a year long internship within the Eastern Diocese.

We conducted a short Q&A with each graduate regarding their experience these past few weeks.

Dn. Timothy Aznavourian

Q: Where did you grow up and what is your home parish?
A: I was born in Boston, MA spending my childhood years in Malden, MA. I moved to Pawtucket, RI when I was 10, which is where I have spent the majority of my adult life. My home parish is Sts. Sahag & Mesrob Armenian Church in Providence, RI.

Q: What is your undergraduate degree?
A: I hold a B.A. in Philosophy from Rhode Island College in RI.

Q: Where are you interning and what are you doing?
A: I am interning at my wife Julianne Aznavourian's (née Tavitian) parish, Hye Pointe Armenian Church in Haverhill, MA with the Rev. Fr. Vart Gyozalyan as my mentor.

I have learned much during my mini-internship post-graduation, particularly in the age of COVID-19 and civil unrest. I have learned that the need for the Church to be there for its faithful remains the same, regardless of the circumstances. I have learned that it is important to really listen to the struggles and trials of the flock which is entrusted to our care. I have also learned that it is essential to be able to take direction from experienced and tested leaders of our Church, of which Fr. Vart is a prime example. I sincerely thank Fr. Vart and the Hye Pointe Armenian Church for welcoming me -- albeit for a short time -- into their fold once more!

Dn. Armen Terjimanian

Q: Where did you grow up and what is your home parish?
A: I'm originally from Troy, Michigan. My home parish is St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI. I also spent 9 years attending St. Mary Armenian Church in Washington, DC, when I lived and worked in the DC region.

Q: What is your undergraduate degree?
A: I have a Bachelor of Arts in Film & Video Studies and Political Science from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI, and a Master of Science in Journalism from Columbia University in New York City.

Q: Where are you interning and what are you doing?
A: Currently, I am doing a mini-internship with the Very Rev. Fr. Aren Jebejian (pastor) and the Rev. Fr. Armash Bagdasarian (assistant pastor) at St. John Armenian Church in Southfield, MI.

I have hit the ground sprinting in this month-long internship. I've been working with the parish's Armenian Medical Advisory Team (AMAT) on how to re-open the parish to the faithful in a phased manner and also participated in auxiliary zoom meetings. Two weeks ago, I facilitated a virtual Bible Study and delivered the Sunday sermon and will deliver another sermon soon. I've asked Hayr Aren and Der Armash to give me as diverse a parish experience as possible in these tumultuous times. It's been a great experience so far!

Members of the St. Nersess Alumni Association from around the country, along with other clergy, gathered virtually on May 19 to celebrate this year's graduating class. The evening began with a Vespers service, presided by Archbishop Hovnan Derderian, Primate of the Western Diocese and Vice President of the St. Nersess Board of Directors.

The Rev. Fr. Mardiros Chevian, Dean, and Dn. Eric Vozzy, both alumni, organized the service from St. Hagop Chapel. Alumni members participated in various parts of the service. Following worship, Fr. Mardiros introduced the three graduates and invited them to speak.

Dn. Armen Terjimanian and Dn. Timothy Aznavourian received their MDiv degrees from St. Nersess Seminary and St Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary. Andrew Kayaian received his MA degree from St. Vladimir's and will continue his studies at St. Nersess and St. Vladimir's seminaries in the Fall, working towards a Master of Theology degree. Each graduate thanked all the people who have helped them on their journey and look forward to continuing in their respective ministries.

Arpi Nakashian, chairperson of the alumni association, then welcomed the graduates to the ranks as alumni. She shared how each member is a living stone, designed and polished by the fiery inspiration of the Holy spirit, each serving a unique place in the architecture of our Church, the body of Christ. Following her remarks, Arpi introduced Bishop Daniel Findikyan, Primate of the Eastern Diocese and President of the St. Nersess Board of Directors, who offered his words of congratulations and expressed how they are now called to carry on our unique Armenian Christianity to our people. Before offering the final prayer and blessing, Archbishop Hovnan shared his wisdom with the group about how in his 40 years of priestly ministry, he has never given a second thought to his choice.

Fr. Mardiros announced that in September the seminary will have a formal celebration for the graduates.
