The ordination took place at Holy Resurrection Armenian Church in New Britain, Connecticut, where Fr. Gabriel had served for two years as deacon-in-charge, and where he will now serve as the parish priest.
A native of Cranston, Rhode Island, Fr. Gabriel was a life-long member of Sts. Sahag and Mesrob Armenian Church in Providence. Although he felt the call of God to serve the church as a young man, he worked for many years in banking before beginning his studies for the priesthood at St. Nersess Seminary.
Following the completion of his studies at St. Nersess, Fr. Mouradjian completed a pastoral internship with Rev. Fr. Kaerkin Kasparian, Pastor of St. Gregory the Enlightener Armenian Church (White Plains, NY), and member of the St. Nersess Board of Directors. Fr. Karekin also served as Fr. Gabriel's sponsoring priest. Later Fr. Gabriel furthered his studies in Armenia and later in Jerusalem.
Yeretzgin Patricia Buttero, a long-time member of Holy Resurrection Church and close friend of Fr. Gabriel and his family, served as the new priest's Godmother. Yeretzgin Patricia is the wife of the late Fr. Michael Buttero, the beloved priest who pastored the Holy Resurrection parish until his death eight years ago.
"The last priest of Holy Resurrection Church was an archangel," explained Abp. Khajag Barsamian during a visit to St. Nersess the day after the ordination, referring to the Archangel "Michael," mentioned in the Bible. "So I thought it would be appropriate to name our new priest 'Gabriel' after another archangel," he said.
Gabriel is the archangel whom God sent to Zecheriah to annoucne the good news of the birth of John the Baptist. The same archangel announced the coming of Jesus to Mary the Mother of God, according to the Gospel of Luke.
Fr. Gabriel is married to Yeretzgin Diane. They have two children, Mitchell and Elizabeth.
Like his patron and guardian, may Der Gabriel Mouradjian lovingly and faithfully herald the good news of blessed life in Christ to the sheep of his flock in New Britain, and to all who cross his path.
