Professor Richard Schneider, a specialist in Byzantine sacred art and architecture, will address this question with a lecture and slide presentation on Armenian architecture at the Seminary on Tuesday, May 8 at 7:30PM.
Armenian architecture is, on the one hand, absolutely unique to the local culture, but on the other hand it reveals a crossroads of ideas and influences from Byzantium, the Near East and even the West. With good reason UNESCO has designated some Armenian churches as world treasures.
Professor Schneider is Emeritus Professor of Church History at York University of the University of Toronto and Visiting Professor of Iconology and Modern Hermeneutics at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York. He also serves as Director of the Program on Orthodox and East Christian Studies at Trinity College Faculty of Divinity (University of Toronto) and is Emeritus Past President of the Canadian Council of Churches. The lecture has been subsidized by the Edward and Anita Essayian Educational Fund of St. Nersess Armenian Seminary and is free and open to the public. A reception will follow.
