St. Nersess Seminary will hold a Reunion and Workshop for past participants of the Deacons' Training Program on November 11-13, Veteran's Day weekend at the Seminary in New Rochelle, New York.
Learning to Assist in the Armenian Church's Worship
Easily one of the most successful youth programs of the Armenian Church in North America, the Deacons' Training Program has brought young men interested in assisting in the liturgical services of the Armenian Church to St. Nersess for ten days of training in the rituals, music and meaning of the church's worship. Over the fifty years of the program's history, hundreds of young men have acquired the skills to chant the hymns and deacon's parts of the liturgy, incense the church ("poorvar"), and assist in the celebration of the church services.
Most of the Seminary's priest-graduates first came to St. Nersess as teenage participants of the Deacons' Training Program.
The Veteran's Day weekend Reunion will focus on special hymns and ceremonies associated with Armenian Christmas. In particular, participants will learn to chant the Canticles of the Three Youths in the Fiery Furnace from Chapter of the Old Testamental Book of Daniel. The Canticles of Daniel 3 are an ancient component of the Armenian Church's Christmas and Easter observances. A deacon and three cantors chant the beautiful and stirring canticles from the altar. The three represent Setrak, Misak and Abednago, young Jewish men who, refusing to bow to a pagan idol, miraculously survived being tossed into a furnace.
